What counts as a UCC filing

UCC-1

The financing statement a lender files to put a claim on record.

UCC-3

Anything filed afterward: an amendment, a continuation, an assignment to another lender, or a termination.

Looking at one filing alone can mislead. A UCC-1 may have been continued, assigned or terminated since it was filed.

What you can search by

Search by the debtor's name, whether a business or an individual. In most states you can also search by the secured party's name, and in a few by the collateral described on the filing. Which of these a state supports is on its page under UCC search by state.

Where UCC filings are recorded

There is no national UCC database. Each state keeps its own, and a filing normally goes in the state where the debtor is organized. If you're not sure which state to search, search all covered states at once. Our guide to where to file explains the rule.

Check a filing at the source

Results link to the state's own record where one is available, so you can verify them. For the states that publish a scanned copy of a filing, Perfecta can open it for you.

Stay on top of new filings

A free account lets you monitor a business. Perfecta rechecks it weekly and emails you when a new filing appears, and its Lapse Calendar shows which filings are about to expire.

Common questions

What is the difference between a UCC-1 and a UCC-3?

A UCC-1 is the financing statement that starts a filing. A UCC-3 changes it later: an amendment, a continuation that extends it, an assignment to a new lender, or a termination that ends it.

How long does a UCC filing last?

Five years, unless it is continued. A continuation can be filed in the six months before the five years end and adds another five years.

Can I search every state at once?

Yes. Perfecta searches all the states it covers and lists the results together.

Where is a UCC filing recorded?

Normally in the state where the debtor is organized. That is why one business can have filings in several states.
